BREAKING IN RAW DENIM
Raw denim arrives stiff. That is the point: the fabric has not been softened or distressed at the factory, so the creases behind the knees, the fading at the thighs and the wear around the pockets all come from you.
Expect two to three weeks of regular wear before the denim feels genuinely comfortable, and a few months before the fades start to show properly. The waistband gives first, then the seat and knees. Once broken in, a well-made pair is as comfortable as anything else in the wardrobe, with the difference that it holds its shape instead of going slack.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What does raw denim mean?
The fabric is unwashed and untreated, so it arrives dark and rigid and softens as you wear it. The fades you end up with are your own rather than factory-applied.
Are they comfortable?
Not on day one, and any shop that tells you otherwise is selling pre-washed denim. Give it a fortnight of regular wear and it moulds to you, at which point it is comfortable in a way a stretch jean never quite manages.
Should I size up?
Take your usual waist if you want a clean fit. Size up one if you prefer a roomier, more comfortable cut through the seat and thigh, or if you plan to wash them rarely.
What is the selvedge edge?
The clean, self-finished edge the fabric gets from a traditional shuttle loom. Roll the cuff and you will see the woven ID line: it is the quickest way to tell genuine selvedge denim from a standard pair.
How should I wash them?
Wear them in before the first wash, then wash cold and inside out as rarely as you reasonably can and hang to dry. That protects the indigo and keeps the fade lines sharp.
Will the indigo transfer?
For the first few wears, yes, onto light trainers, bags and pale seats. It settles once the surface indigo has gone.
How long does UK delivery take?
UK orders are processed in 1-2 days and usually arrive within 5-7 days. Shipping is 10.99 GBP, or free on orders over 100 GBP.
What is the returns policy?
You have 30 days from receiving your order to request a return, and UK returns are free.
