Detroit Jacket | Men's Vintage Padded Workwear Jacket

Heavy Canvas Outside. Quilted Plaid Inside.

Men's vintage Detroit jacket in brown 415gsm cotton canvas

Men's vintage Detroit jacket in a stiff 415 gsm cotton canvas, padded and lined for proper cold-weather wear.

A dark contrast collar, a short boxy body and a quilted plaid lining that shows every time you wear it open. It is the work jacket you reach for from October to March, when a trucker or coach jacket is not enough.

The Story Behind It

The Detroit jacket came out of American workwear in the 1950s: a short, blanket-lined canvas jacket with a contrast collar, made for factory floors and building sites around the Motor City. It has become one of the most copied shapes in menswear, and Japanese Amekaji style treats it as a staple. This version keeps the original layout and swaps the blanket lining for a padded, quilted plaid one for a warmer winter build.

Why This Jacket Stands Out

✔️ Engraved Shank Buttons
Lettered metal buttons at the cuffs, a classic workwear detail

Men's Detroit Jacket FAQs

What is a Detroit jacket?

A Detroit jacket is a short American work jacket in heavy cotton canvas with a contrast collar and a warm lining. This men's Detroit jacket keeps that shape in 415 gsm canvas, with cotton padding and a quilted plaid lining.

Is this Detroit jacket warm enough for winter?

Yes. The heavy canvas, cotton padding and quilted lining make it a proper winter jacket for UK weather. On the coldest days, add a knit underneath and size up for room.

What size should I order?

Take your normal size to wear it over a T-shirt or light knit. Size up for a hoodie underneath or if you are tall, as the sleeves are on the short side. Check the chest measurement in the size chart above. Sizes run S to 2XL.

What colours does it come in?

Brown and Army Green, both with a dark contrast collar and the same plaid quilted lining.

Does the back zip open?

No. The zip on the back is a decorative detail inspired by the game pocket on vintage hunting jackets. The working pockets are the two angled hand pockets and the chest pocket.

What does it go with?

Washed denim and a white tee for a classic Amekaji fit, fatigue pants and boots for workwear, or chinos and a chunky knit for a smarter winter look.

How should I wash it?

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, do not tumble dry, and air dry.
